Some of you may still be unfamiliar with the latest news about Winamp. What is Winamp? Winamp is a popular media player application in the 2000s. The application is quite iconic and invites nostalgia for the morning of computer users a few years ago. In that year, Winamp became one of the reliable song player applications.
Well, lately it’s been widely heard that Winamp has returned and introduced a new logo.
What is Winamp?
Reported by Business Today, Winamp was released in 1997 and has 80 million active users worldwide. Winamp once reigned as a popular and reliable media player in that year.
Although in the end the popularity declined and Winamp’s success waned in the period 2000-2010. The emergence of streaming music applications which later became one of the transitions for users to leave Winamp.
Legendary music player, Winamp finally launched in beta version Release Candidate 1 (RC1). The application developer presents Winamp 5.9 RC1 Bulid 9999 which can now be downloaded on the Winamp forum.
Winamp 5.9 will also support the Windows 11 operating system. This app is actually not that new, as only an update of Winamp 5.8 was released in 2018. In this update the developer focuses on feature enhancements and visual codebase migration of the app.
Besides being able to run on Windows 11, Winamp 5.9 is also designed to have the ability to synchronize with the Android version of the application. The developer also improved support for the VP8 codec, added support for podcast directories, and implemented M38 codec support.
The developer also optimizes and fixes Winamp bugs so that the application can run more stable. Technically the Winamp 5.9 interface was upgraded from the Visual Studio 2008 (VS2008) codebase to Visual Studio 2019 (VS2019).
That way, device support for Winamp is also improved, at least a device that supports Windows 7 SP1 or later. So, Windows XP and Vista users can only use older versions of Winamp. However, Winamp’s visuals are not so much polished, so users can feel nostalgic with the appearance that this music player application offers. “For the user there might not be much of a change, but the hardest part was actually migrating the entire project from VS2008 to VS2019 even though it worked out in the end.
Now the foundation has been laid, and we can focus more on developing features,” said DJ Egg, Winamp Techorator via the Winamp online forum. So far the Winamp 5.9 application is still under development or not yet available in a stable/final version. However, users can already Download it through the Winamp forum. The Winamp application itself was quite popular among computer users in the 90s.
But as the music industry shifts from physical media to digital (online) and popular music streaming, users no longer rely so much on storing a lot of audio media and playing them with Winamp.
In the end Winamp application development stopped at the end of 2013 in version 5666. Four years later or in 2018, Winamp was released in version Winamp 5.8 and the developers promised major updates, including modern features like streaming via the cloud. Unfortunately the update never arrived, until finally Winamp 5.9 RC1 Build 9999 or the current version can be downloaded by users in beta
